Throughout the year, the Johnson Foundation cooperates with other organizations in bringing together recognized authorities from the U.S. and abroad for discussions of issues confronting society. The conferences focus on educational excellence, intellectual and cultural growth, and improvement of the human environment. Participants include Nobel prize winners, ambassadors, university professors, authors, leaders in the environment field and the arts, representatives of business, labor, and the human services professions, minority group leaders, and representatives of the media and government.

Conferences of one to three days' length are held throughout the year. Conference listings are updated monthly and posted at this website. Check back frequently for additions to the list. Recent topics have included: Next Steps for the Higher Education, Network for Community Engagement, Coordinating Funding Strategies for Development Democracy, The Community Neighborhood Renaissance Partnership, and Civic Engagement:  New Directions and Challenges.

The conferences are held at Wingspread, the Johnson Foundation's conference center and headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as a private home, Wingspread is considered to be one of the finest examples of Wright's prairie architecture. Information about the Johnson Foundation and the Wingspread facility is also available at their website www.johnsonfdn.org.

The Wingspread Fellows program at Northwestern is coordinated by the Weinberg College Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising. If you wish to participate in the Wingspread Fellows Program, you should submit an application as soon as you see a conference that interests you.  Contact the Wingspread Coordinator, Jeanne Ravid, in the WCAS Advising Office if you have questions.

Since the number of northwestern Wingspread Fellows each year is limited, selection will be competitive.  Application is limited to juniors and seniors only.  Applicants should have some background which will prepare them to take fullest advantage of the opportunity to participate in the conference or briefing to which they apply. The application should reach the Wingspread Coordinator no later than four weeks before the date of the conference. Applications are available at this website. They require a letter outlining the reasons you desire to attend the specified conference; the background (in courses and otherwise) you will bring to the conference; and the way(s) in which you plan to share the experience with other Northwestern students. Applicants may arrange to have a faculty member send a letter of recommendation to the Wingspread Coordinator, but this is not required.

Award: All expenses including transportation to the conferences, lodging, and meals are paid by the Johnson Foundation.

Please note: Because Conversations from Wingspread are of such short duration, travel expenses are the responsibility of the student attending.
