Special WCAS Research Awards
Please Note: Students should allow at least two weeks from the submission of their completed application, including receipt of the faculty recommendation (for Academic Year and Summer Grants), to receive a decision on their grant application.
Weinberg College awards grants of up to $1000 to assist undergraduates in pursuing original research or creative work under the close supervision of a faculty member during the academic year. Grants can help cover the costs of supplies (but not lab equipment), data-collection, travel, and other expenses directly related to the research or creative project.
Applications for Weinberg College Academic Year Research Grants may be submitted at any time, and decisions are made on a rolling basis. Students should allow at least two weeks from the submission of their completed application, including receipt of the faculty recommendation, to receive a decision on their grant application. IMPORTANT: Do not apply for a Weinberg College Academic Year Grant if you meet either of these criteria:
- You have never received an academic year research grant from the Northwestern University Research Grants Committee.
- You are a student in another school at Northwestern. Students in other schools who are also doing Weinberg majors are not eligible to apply for these funds.
Students who meet one or both of these criteria should instead apply for a grant from the Northwestern University Research Grants Committee and/or from their home school.
Weinberg College awards summer research grants to sophomores and juniors to cover research and living expenses. Students who request support for living expenses over the full eight-week summer period will be considered for a $3,000 stipend. To accept this stipend you must agree to take on no other internship, paid work, or research grant during the eight-week period. You must not be enrolled in courses for any part of this period, and only limited volunteer work is permitted. Students who would like support for a shorter period of time can be considered for a prorated stipend.

Applications are accepted through Wednesday of the spring quarter Reading Period, but earlier applications are encouraged. Students should allow at least two weeks from the submission of their completed application, including receipt of the faculty recommendation, to receive a decision on their grant application. IMPORTANT: Do not complete an application for a Weinberg College Summer Research Grant if you meet either of these criteria:- You have never applied for a Northwestern University Summer Research Grant, and you also meet the other criteria for eligibility to apply for a summer research grant from the university (for example, you hope to spend at least 8 weeks of the summer working full-time on your project).
- You are a student in another school at Northwestern. Students in other schools who are also doing Weinberg majors are not eligible to apply for these funds.
Students who meet one or both of these criteria should instead apply for a summer grant from the Northwestern Undergraduate Research Grants Committee. Weinberg College students who were turned down for a University grant and would like to apply for Weinberg funds should write to Professor William Haarlow at student-grants@wcas.northwestern.edu.
Weinberg College also awards grants of up to $1000 to selected Weinberg undergraduates who are presenting the results of their research or creative work at professional conferences. Only students who are presenting their work may receive these awards; those who are attending but not presenting are not eligible. Awarded funds may not cover the full costs of attending the conference.
These funds are available only for Weinberg College students. Students in other schools at Northwestern who are also doing Weinberg majors are not eligible to apply for these funds. They may instead apply to for a conference travel grant from the Northwestern Undergraduate Research Grants Committee.

D. Special WCAS Research Awards
In addition to the general academic-year and summer research grants, Weinberg College offers some special research awards. These awards, provided through the generosity of donors, recognize exceptional promise in undergraduate research in the arts and sciences.
Katherine L. Krieghbaum Scholarships provide research grants for senior-year research projects. The scholarships are awarded by the Weinberg College Committee on Superior Students and Honors to those Weinberg College students who, in the judgment of the Committee, best demonstrate promise of distinguished research in their major.
The Herskovits Undergraduate Research Award is administered by Weinberg College iIn collaboration with the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, the Program of African Studies, and the office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education. This award provides funding for research involving use of Northwestern’s world-renowned Africana collection. Contact the Program of African Studies at 847-491-7323 for additional information.
Posner Summer Fellowships (previously known as Davee Summer Fellowships) provide summer research funds for students from underrepresented groups who are at earlier stages than students eligible for most other funding sources. Fellowship winners will typically be freshmen and sophomores, and their research plans may be more preliminary. For more information, contact Associate Dean Mary Finn (mfinn@northwestern.edu).
Northwestern University Undergraduate Research Grants
The Office of Northwestern’s Associate Provost for Academic Education administers Undergraduate Research Grants that are open to undergraduate students from throughout the university. This office is the primary source for summer research grants for Northwestern students, as well as for grants for research during the academic year. The office also provides funds for students presenting their work at conferences. In addition, they maintain webpages with information on applying for research grants and on other research funding opportunities.

Northwestern University Office of Fellowships
The Office of Fellowships provides information and guidance for students regarding national and international fellowship competitions. The fellowships fall into many different categories, and some provide opportunities for conducting research, including research carried out overseas. Residential College Awards
If you are associated with one of Northwestern’s Residential Colleges and involved in research with a faculty fellow, then you may be able to receive funding for the research through the Residential College Fellow Research Assistant program (FARA). This program provides funds for Residential College members to serve as faculty fellows’ research assistants. Students can discuss this opportunity with faculty fellows.
