Each year, many Northwestern students and recent graduates apply to law school. If you are considering a career in law, you can prepare assiduously for law school and lose nothing should you change your mind about it later on. This is because the best preparation for law school is simply to get the best liberal arts education you can. There is no specific major that you must choose, no specific set of courses that you must include, in order to be well prepared for law school. This leaves you a great deal of freedom - but not without any outside limits at all. As an undergraduate considering a career in law, you should develop the ability to write cogently and coherently, to analyze carefully and accurately, to reason logically, and to speak effectively and articulately. You should also try to learn more about what law school and legal practice are really like.
For lots of useful information for pre-law students, see the Weinberg College Pre-Law Brochure. You can also find an online list of recommended readings for pre-law students. Take a look, too, at our online list of pre-law web resources.
Students interested in law can also call the Office of Undergraduate Studies and Advising, 491-7560, to set up an appointment with the pre-law adviser.
