Department Overview
The Asian Languages and Cultures Department offers an education in the study of Asian languages, cultures and literature. Students will acquire linguistic and transcultural competence in Asian Studies and learn to better appreciate Asia as a dynamic site of international cultural relations. ALC is centered on studying the cultures and literatures of China, India, Japan, Korea and related cultures, where these four native languages are spoken.

Knowledge of an Asian language offers entry into rich and complex cultures that are both fascinating and useful to understand. Moreover, familiarity with an Asian language and culture provides an informed perspective on parts of the world that are economically and politically important to all Americans. Even in the sciences and engineering fields, there are exchange opportunities where fluency in an Asian language becomes quite useful.
