Christine BellChristine Bell (Ph.D. 1996, Northwestern University) serves as both a College Adviser in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and as a Lecturer in the Department of Art History. She had careers as a photo-stylist, a seamstress/costumier, and a textile conservator before being seduced by the muse of Art History. A specialist in North American Art through 1900, her research interests include national symbols; photography and the press; and war and gender. Her doctoral research was supported by the Smithsonian Institution, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Northwestern Alumnae Board; she is currently at work on expanding her dissertation into a book on the uses of an art of sentiment in fighting the Civil War.
