Advising
The Graduate Advisor counsels students and answers their questions about the program. The curriculum pursued by each student is subject to departmental approval through the Graduate Advisor. During their first year in the program, students meet the Graduate Advisor before the beginning of each quarter to discuss their progress and select appropriate courses. Upon the completion of one year (for those with a prior M.A.) or two years (no prior M.A.) of course work, students enlist two additional advisors, one in the major field to advise on dissertation research, and one in the minor field to work on the syllabus preparation requirement. Advanced students continue to meet with the Graduate Advisor to determine their course of study but they do so in consultation with their major and minor field advisors. Upon completion of coursework, students organize their dissertation committees. The Graduate Advisor remains responsible for monitoring each student's schedule, signing appropriate forms, and providing other advice as needed. The primary responsibility for satisfying the requirements of the Graduate School, however, remains with the individual student.
