Current Scholars - Laurie Jaeckel

"I am a sophomore American Studies major and I am thinking of doing my concentration in urban studies and urban development. My particular interests are public housing, public policy, and community development. Recently, I have been looking at how public housing reinforced segregation and was influenced by white resistance. I would also like to look at aspects of community development in history and in current times. I would particularly like to take advantage of the Institute for Policy Research here at Northwestern.

Also I am interested in looking into the rise of antiurbanism in American Society. To me, the question that arises is where does this sense of antiurbanism originate? What is its history and why do we keep seeing the flight of people away from the cities, and the public realm in general, to more intimate and exclusive communities. In addition, what is its effect upon society in general and is the idea of civil society even applicable in modern times?"
