Major Requirements
Each Drama Major completes the requirements for the major in his or her own way. The flexibility of the Drama Major makes it possible to double-major within Weinberg or across schools or to complete an adjunct major or minor. The Drama Major encourages students to study abroad and to pursue internships within the academic year.
Students must complete two prerequisites for the Drama Major, one chosen from Weinberg, typically either Introduction to Drama (English 212) or Introduction to Shakespeare (English 234), and one chosen from the School of Communication, typically either Analysis and Performance of Literature (Gen Cmn 103) or Theatre in Context (Theatre 140-1 or 140-2).
In addition to the two prerequisites, Drama Majors take twelve further courses, with a minimum of nine at the 300-level or above. At least six courses must focus on dramatic literature, theatre history, and/or performance theory; among these, three must consider drama, theatre, and performance before 1850, and no more than two may focus on Shakespeare. Two courses on drama, theatre, and performance after 1850 are also required. Students are advised, although not required, to take at least one course on African, Asian, and/or Latin American theatre.
Three courses from the twelve must involve performance practices in Theatre, Performance Studies, Dance, and/or Music. Three additional courses complete the major, including one graduate seminar at the 400-level or above, typically taken during the senior year. Taken together, the twelve courses should be balanced between Weinberg College and the School of Communication or School of Music, in order to ensure a range of different formats and approaches.
In addition to the two prerequisites and twelve major courses, Drama Majors take four related courses in adjacent disciplines, including creative writing, literature, art history, philosophy, history, film and media studies, and the sociology of culture. In many, but not all, cases, related courses may also count toward distribution requirements.
