Environmental Issues in the Pacific Northwest
Spend Fall quarter on a beautiful island in the Pacific Northwest at the world renowned Friday Harbor Marine Labs. Undergraduates interested in the environment can look closely at such issues as salmon restoration, sustainable farming, and the impact of climate change. Students can also do internships and carry out their own research, looking at policy and legal issues. The Labs are set on beautiful 485-acre biological preserve on San Juan Island, excellent site for senior thesis research. Courses are approved for NU credit. Students choose from such courses as:
       - Social Change and the Environment

       - Environment Research Apprenticeship

       - Marine Biology

       - Farming, Fishing and Local Food

Deadline for Fall 2011 March 15 for early admission; July 1 final deadline (if space available). The Labs are encouraging interaction between future leaders in environmental issues from both the social and natural sciences. Apply early! Green Youth Farm - Community Gardening

As a Green Youth Farm intern you will be working as part of a dedicated, energetic team at one of four sustainable farms, working alongside teenagers to produce vibrant young people and delicious organically grown food for underserved communities.  Green Youth Farm participants are middle/high school students from underserved communities who learn about principles of sustainable agriculture, teamwork, leadership and entrepreneurship as they cultivate a crop and their own work and career skills. The White House Internship: A Public Service Leadership Program

The White House Internship Program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. This hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today’s young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office and prepare them for future public service opportunities.

The White House Internship Program’s mission is to make the “People’s House” accessible to future leaders from around the nation.

Breakthrough Institute

The Breakthrough Institute, a California-based public policy think tank is now recruiting student applicants for its summer fellowship program, Breakthrough Generation. Chicago Park District

The Chicago Park District is hiring a Program & Event Facilitator.  This person would be responsible for developing and executing outdoor and environmental education programs and working with youth and families to facilitate positive nature experiences.  Must be willing to work all over the city of Chicago. Volunteer with Citizens' Greener Evanston

CGE's Transportation Task Force is in need of volunteers to do research, 
and advocate for better transportation options in Evanstion focused on:

* making public transportation easier, more predictable and more adaptable to Evanstonians' needs;
* increasing awareness of transportation options and foster better bike/car/pedestrian relations in the community;
* attracting community's attention on fuel options alternative to oil.

Activist Training with Greenpeace Semester

The Greenpeace Semester provides action-filled organizing and leadership training for student activists over fall and summer sessions.  The program combines classroom-style workshops with hands-on field training and travel and briefings on environmental issues ranging from ocean protection to toxic pollution to corporate abuse of the environment.  Applications are open NOW for the two upcoming summer sessions in Washington D.C. with an early deadline of Feb 7th.

Worldwatch Institute

IHas two unpaid internship opportunities: Media and Communications and Food and Agriculture Research.

The Media and Communications Internship with Worldwatch is a unique opportunity to support and participate in research that drives environmental policy. The intern will work closely with the Institute’s staff to design, organize, and develop web information and content. Responsibilities include: designing the presentation of online information and data, managing web content, and helping to create a multi-media component to the project. Interns will have the opportunity to have their articles published in major news outlets, gain experience in writing press releases and opinion editorials, do effective reporter outreach, and stage events.

The Food and Agriculture Research internship with Worldwatch is a unique opportunity to support and participate in research that drives environmental and agricultural policy. The intern will work closely with the Institute's food and agriculture staff to refine and organize information that will contribute to a project on sustainable agricultural innovations. Responsibilities include: research and fact-checking; collecting, organizing, and managing web content; organizing resources and contacts; providing logistical and administrative support to on-the-ground research.
