ESEP Department
The major is structured around four successive levels of course work. Students choose to focus on one of two tracks, either environmental science or environmental policy. The two tracks are broadly overlapping and include work in environmental engineering as well. Although some courses may be taken at any time, others have prerequisites and must be taken in a sequence. It is advisable to complete the Foundation courses in the first two years of the program and to take the Core courses during the second and third years.

Foundation courses in science, mathematics, and social science support an understanding of environmental issues.

Core courses represent the first step toward focusing on the environment. These specialized courses focusing on environmental aspects of earth and biological sciences and the social sciences.

Advanced Studies are upper level courses in science, engineering, and the social science that develop the theory, methods, and techniques of environmental analysis.

Environmental Research Seminar is the capstone of the program. It is a two-quarter research seminar taken in the senior year in which students pursue environmental research themes of their own choosing.
