Conditions for the McCormick Professorship

THE CHARLES DEERING McCORMICK

PROFESSORSHIP OF TEACHING EXCELLENCE

(1)          There will be ten (10) professorships.

 

(2)          Each professor will be designated as the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence.

 

(3)          The professorships will be awarded to the faculty of those schools and colleges with undergraduate programs of instruction.  Individuals eligible for the professorships should be regular, tenured members of the faculty.  The professorships will be awarded to those individual faculty members who have consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom teaching, or who have developed significant innovations which have also influenced the methods and teaching effectiveness of other faculty.

 

(4)          The McCormick professorships shall be awarded to individual faculty members for three-year terms.

 

(5)          The McCormick professors, each year, shall receive a $7,000 supplemental salary award and an additional $3,000 for professional development which may be used for the hiring of assistants, research expenses, attendance at professional meetings, and related activities.

 

(6)          Each McCormick Professor will also be designated as a Fellow of the University-wide Searle Center for Teaching Excellence and will be available for consultation with the Center staff.  The McCormick professors also will be encouraged to provide guidance to other faculty members and to participate in workshops for faculty and general University audiences.  The McCormick Professors may also be asked to prepare a brief paper reflecting on how they approach teaching and have developed their pedagogical skills.  These papers may be edited and published for distribution to the University community.

 

(7)          Individual faculty members will be nominated for a McCormick Professorship by the Deans of the schools or colleges in which they have their principal appointments.  The Deans may develop internal, school-based procedures to identify nominees.

 

(8)          The nominations will be reviewed by a committee chaired by the Provost and made up of senior faculty members and administrators, along with a student representative.

 

(9)          The selection committee will submit its recommendations to the President. Appointments to the McCormick Professorships will be made by the President, subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees.

 

(10)        The individual professorships shall be awarded without regard to the school affiliation of the faculty member.

 

(11)        The number of professorships awarded annually will be the number necessary to fill all the available positions.

 

(12)        Holders of McCormick Professorships will normally be expected to be on a leave of absence from the University for research purposes no more than one academic quarter during their three year term.  However, McCormick Professors who receive external funding from sources such as ACLS, NEH, or Guggenheim for a full year's leave may take leave from their McCormick Professorships for that year. In such cases, the McCormick Professor's term will be extended for a year, with the perquisites withheld during the year of leave paid during that fourth year. In cases where such an extension has been granted, that Professorship shall not be counted among the ten available positions during that fourth year.

 

Conditions for the McCormick Lectureship/Clinical Professorship


THE CHARLES DEERING McCORMICK

UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED LECTURERSHIP/CLINICAL PROFESSORSHIP

 

(1)          The Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturerships/Clinical Professorships will be awarded to persons who are regular full-time faculty and hold the title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, or clinical professor, including assistant and associate clinical professor, in those schools and colleges with undergraduate programs of instruction. Individuals eligible for the Lecturership/Clinical Professorship must have been full-time members of the faculty for at least seven years.  The Lecturerships/ Clinical Professorships will be awarded to those individual faculty members who have consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom teaching, or who have developed significant innovations which have also influenced the methods and teaching effectiveness of other faculty.

 

(2)          Two Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturers / Clinical Professors will be appointed each year.

 

(3)          Each person so appointed will be designated as the Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturer or the Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Clinical Professor

 

(4)          The Lecturership/Clinical Professorship shall be awarded to individual faculty members for a one-year term.

 

(5)          The Charles Deering McCormick University Distinguished Lecturer/Clinical Professor shall receive a $7,000 supplemental salary award.

Conditions for the Alumnae of Northwestern Teaching Professorship

THE ALUMNAE OF NORTHWESTERN

TEACHING PROFESSORSHIP

 

  • The Alumnae of Northwestern Teaching Professorship will be awarded no more than once each three years to a member of the faculty of those schools and colleges with undergraduate programs of instruction.  Individuals eligible for the professorships should be regular, tenured members of the faculty.  The professorship will be awarded a faculty member who has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance in classroom teaching, or who has developed significant innovations which have also influenced the methods and teaching effectiveness of other faculty.
  • The Alumnae professor shall serve a three year term; each year of the term he or she shall receive a $7,000 supplemental salary award and an additional $3,000 for professional development which may be used for the hiring of assistants, research expenses, attendance at professional meetings, and related activities.
  • Each Alumnae Professor will also be designated as a Fellow of the University-wide Searle Center for Teaching Excellence and will be available for consultation with the Center staff.  The Alumnae professor also will be encouraged to provide guidance to other faculty members and to participate in workshops for faculty and general University audiences.  The Alumnae Professor may also be asked to prepare a brief paper reflecting on how he/she approaches teaching and has developed his/her pedagogical skills.  These papers may be edited and published for distribution to the University community.
