Hewlett Fund

Awards Program
Grants or matching funds are available to one or more faculty members or departments for projects that enhance undergraduate curricular innovation and development. It should be emphasized that the Fund is designated for curricular improvement; for example, for planning and evaluation studies, experimentation, program initiation, equipment for classrooms and teaching laboratories, or response to special opportunities not funded within the college's normal budget. The fund is not to be used for such activities typically in the college's budget as regular instructional or administrative salaries, standard faculty leaves, faculty research, except as it relates to undergraduate teaching responsibilities, plant construction, renovation or maintenance. Nor is it designed to fund continuing activities. Grants to individual faculty members generally range from $500 to $5,000, although groups and programs/departments may apply for larger grants.

Review Process
Requests for funds are submitted to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Computing Technology who co-chair the Hewlett Committee. Members of the Hewlett Committee are the Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, the Associate Dean for Physical Environment, and the Assistant Dean for Computing Technology.

Application
Applications should consist of the Application Form and a short (usually two to three pages) description of the project and a budget. The description should include details about the project, how it relates to the current curriculum, names of specific courses involved and their enrollments, and how the project will improve instruction and benefit students. If the proposal is submitted for the development of a new course, the application should include anticipated course enrollment, future plans for offering the course and how the course will affect teaching loads within the department.

Department Endorsement
The application should include a short letter from the Program Director/Department Chair supporting the proposal and indicating how the proposal matches departmental curriculum goals, how it will be maintained and what is its effect on departmental course offerings and teaching loads.
