International Health Experience
Students are required to participate in a substantial public health experience abroad, in one of the international public health programs offered by Northwestern University or in another supervised activity approved by the program director.
1. NU Programs
Public Health in Mexico (Summer, 8 weeks). This Northwestern program is hosted by the Medical School at Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City. It combines intensive language study, a course on "History and Culture in Mexico," a seminar on "Public Health in Mexico," and a supervised research project on public health for a total of 4 credits. In addition, students participate in weekly excursions to cultural and historical sites, as well as site visits to health agencies and clinics. As part of the program, students work in an indigenous rural village for three days. Public Health in China (Summer, 8 weeks). This program is hosted by Capital University of Medical Sciences and Tsinghua University in Beijing. It combines intensive Chinese with seminars on "Public Health in China" and "Traditional Chinese Medicine" for a total of 4 credits. Excursions and cultural activities are included in the program, as well as a working experience in a rural health clinic and visits to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. Public Health in Europe: Policies and Institutions (Fall semester). This program is hosted by Sciences Po (Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris). In addition to French language training, students take courses on "France and the European Union," "European Health Care Systems: Organization and Regulation," and "Public Health in France and the European Union: Policies and Current Issues" for a total of 6 credits. Students conduct supervised research on health policy and present their projects to the class and to other students and faculty at the end of the semester. Finally, students participate in excursions to the WHO (World Health organization) in Geneva, the Ecole Nationale de Santé Publique in Rennes, and other relevant sites in and around Paris, such as OECD, CREDES, and the Institut Pasteur. Public Health in South Africa (Spring quarter). This program is designed for students interested in health policy, public health, and South Africa in general. The program is hosted by Stellenbosch University, located just outside of Cape Town in the wine-growing region of the Cape. The program offers courses on "Public Health in South Africa," "HIV/AIDS in Africa," "The Political Economy of South Africa" and "Introduction to South African Cultures and Languages" for a total of 4 credits. Global Healthcare Technology in South Africa (Spring quarter): This program offers engineering students an opportunity to study the challenges of designing medical devices for developing countries. Hosted by the University of Cape Town, Northwestern students join students from South Africa, as well as other African countries, in classes covering medical device design and the management of the technology in resource poor environments. The program offers classes on "Healthcare Technology Innovation and Design," "Healthcare in Resource Poor Environments," "Healthcare Technology Assessment and Planning," and "Race, Culture, and Identity in South Africa." The design course will count for the capstone requirement in your department. Students will have an opportunity to visit hospitals and community health clinics throughout Western Cape Province and work with local healthcare providers to design medical devices which better meet their requirements at a price which is more affordable.
Public Health in Uganda (Spring quarter). This program is designed to introduce students to the culture, public health system, and policy challenges of contemporary Uganda, and to introduce the students to the use of performance for health education and development. The program is hosted in partnership with Makerere University in Kampala. The program offers courses on "Public Health in Uganda," " Expressive Culture and Public Health,” “Contemporary Uganda: A Political Economy Perspective,” and "Luganda Language and Culture" for a total of 4 credits. 2. Other Study Abroad Programs
Students may fulfill their international requirement by participating in other organized study abroad programs that emphasize public health issues or provide health related research opportunities. These programs must be pre-approved by the director of the Minor to count as the required international public health experience.
