1. Course Requirements
Students must complete seven courses, including three core courses and four elective courses. The three core courses must include "Introduction to International Public Health" and two of the following courses: "Achieving Global Impact Through Local Engagement," "Comparative Health Systems and Reforms," "Gender and Global Health," "Global Bioethics," "International Perspectives on Mental Health," "Introduction to International Public Health," "Managing Global Health Challenges," "Theories of Global Health" and "Violence and Global Health." Click here for full descriptions of core and elective courses.

2. International Health Experience
Students are required to participate in a substantial public health experience abroad, in one of the international public health programs offered by Northwestern University or in another supervised activity approved by the program director. Northwestern offers public health programs in Mexico, China, South Africa, Uganda, and France. Click here for full descriptions of these programs.

3. Research  While not a requirement of the minor, students are encouraged to conduct public health research both on campus and abroad under the supervision of faculty in any relevant discipline or program.   "Contraceptive Use and Need in the Developing World" and "Approaches to Obesity Reduction in Developed and Less Developed Countries" are examples of two recent research projects conducted by Global Health minors on campus. Students may continue this research abroad.

In addition, research is a major component of the public health programs offered by Northwestern in Mexico, France and South Africa.   Students are encouraged to continue their research upon their return to campus. Global Health Minors are eligible to apply for research grants, including  the Martha Mabie Fellowship, to support their public health research both here and abroad.  For more information, please contact International Program Development at: globalhealth@northwestern.edu

Students applying for Fulbright, LUCE, and Boren Fellowships, and Undergraduate Research Grants, increasingly propose health related research projects to be conducted under the supervision of host institutions and faculty abroad.   International Program Development staff are available to assist students with their applications.
