Is an MA required for admission into the PhD program?
An MA is not a requirement for acceptance into the PhD program.
How many students are accepted into the Linguistics PhD program each year?
We usually admit 4-6 PhD students out of approximately 55 applicants per year.
What Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required for admission?
No specific minimum GRE score is required for admission; however, we generally consider a good GRE total (Verbal + Quantitative) to be around 1400. Successful applicants with lower GRE scores typically have a strong undergraduate academic record and/or some other relevant experience that convinces the admissions committee of their ability and preparation to take on the demands of graduate study in Linguistics.
Who must submit Test of English of a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores and what is the required minimum score on this test?

What kind of financial aid is available to Linguistics PhD students?
It is the policy of Northwestern University to only admit students into doctoral programs with funding. That is, if you were accepted into our program, you would be offered funding from Northwestern. For information about funding for Northwestern graduate students, please go to this website.
What kind of financial aid is available to Linguistics MA students?
Usually, no funding is available from the university for MA students.
If I am accepted to a graduate program in Linguistics, is it possible for me to attend part-time?
Only in highly unusual circumstances.
Can I be admitted to a graduate program in Linguistics without an undergraduate degree in Linguistics?
Yes, many highly successful professional linguists began their academic careers with an undergraduate degree in another discipline including, but not limited to biology, computer science, foreign languages and literature, mathematics, music, philosophy, and psychology.
How long will it take to earn the PhD degree?
It is reasonable to expect to complete the doctorate in 4-6 years; however the length of time to complete any research degree depends primarily in the individual student?s rate of progress. Funding from the university typically cannot be extended beyond the 5th or 6th year.

Can I visit the department before submitting an application?
It is the department policy to only have in-person interviews/meetings once we have an application in hand. However, you may contact the departmental admissions officer (admissions@ling.northwestern.edu) at any time with any specific questions about our graduate program.
