Former Chicele Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford and Professor Emeritus of Political Science and Philosophy at McGill University. Among his publications are Hegel (Cambridge University Press, 1975), Philosophical Papers (2 vols., Cambridge University Press, 1985) and Sources of the Self (Harvard University Press, 1989). He is currently working on topics in social and political theory having to do with multiculturalism, secularization, and alternative modernities.
