1.)  NSF (National Science Foundation) Graduate Research Fellowship Program

  • Interdisciplinary: November 1 deadline.  Social Science: November 6 deadline.
  • Applicants must have completed no more than 12 months of graduate study at time of application.

2.) Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) For Individual Predoctoral Fellows from NIH

  • April 8, August 8, and December 8 deadlines
  • Although officially applicants must be doctoral candidates who have successfully completed their comprehensive examinations or the equivalent by the time of award and will be performing dissertation research and training, students may be eligible earlier in their programs. (Mental health research focus may be necessary.)

3.) NIH Predoctoral Fellowship Awards for Minority Students

  • Applicants must be enrolled in graduate program or accepted into program

4.) American Association of University Women

  • International Fellowships
    • December 1 deadline
    • Provide one year of graduate or postgraduate study to women who are not U.S. citizens

    • Support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave.

5.) American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program (MFP)

  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship
    • January 15 deadline
    • Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent resident aliens with an alien registration card (I-151 or I-551).

    • Intended to increase minority representation and to enhance research in health disparities

6.) Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship

  • November 2 deadline
  • Applicants need not be citizens of the United States; however they must be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States.

7.) Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation:

    • Dissertation Grants in Women's Studies
  • Encourages original and significant research on issues related to women's health, especially in the implications of research for the understanding of women's lives and its significance for public policy or treatment.
    • Must be doctoral candidate in U.S. University and completed all degree requirements except for dissertation.

  • Charlotte W. Newcombe Dissertation Fellowship
  • Encourages original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences
  • Must be doctoral candidate in U.S. University and completed all degree requirements except for dissertation.

8.) United States Department of Defense

  • General Info
    • Research funding available in Cognitive and Neural Science (comprising 4% of all monies allocated by DoD)
    • Research must be “for the benefit of the nation as a whole; for example, it must be available to any industrial organization for exploitation.”
  • The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program
    • Designed to encourage U.S. citizens to pursue advanced study in science and engineering fields pertinent to national defense.
    • Must be United States citizen or national at or near the beginning of graduate study.

9.) Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program

  • October 15 deadline
  • For graduate students who have not completed their first year of study
  • Eligibility limited to United States citizens or nationals, permanent residents of the U.S., or citizens of any one of the Freely Associated States.
  • Recognizes students with superior academic ability and achievement, exceptional promise, and financial need.

10.) SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) of Canada Doctoral Awards

  • November 15 deadline
  • For students applying to, or registered in, a doctoral program or a combined MA/PhD program in the social sciences or humanities. There are restrictions on these grants that may make it difficult to obtain them for study in a U.S. university.

11.) Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans

  • Provides opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields
  • A New American is an individual who (1) is a resident alien; i.e., holds a Green Card, or, (2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen, or (3) is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens
  • To be eligible you must not be older than thirty years of age as of NOVEMBER 1, 2007

12.) DAAD German Academic Exchange Service

  • Offers a variety of aid for those who would like to study in Germany for one year
  • Open to US and Canadian citizens and foreign nationals who have been studying at a US university for two or more years

1.) APAGS (American Psychological Association Graduate Student) Scholarships and Awards

  • Various awards are available; please consult website for specific details.
  • May 15 deadline.
  • APAGS scholarships are available to graduate student members of APAGS (If you are a student affiliate of the American Psychological Association [APA] and in graduate school, you are automatically a member of APAGS)

2.) APA (American Psychological Association) Dissertation Research Award Program

  • September 14 deadline
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time and be in good standing in a graduate program in psychology at a regionally accredited university or college located in the United States or Canada.

3.) APF/COGDOP (American Psychological Foundation/ Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology) Graduate Research Scholarships in Psychology

  • June 15 deadline.
  • Applicants must be in an interim master's program or doctoral program.
  • Nominated by graduate departments that are members of COGDOP(Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology).

4.) Ford Foundation

  • Most foundation grants are to organizations; grants to individuals are awarded either through publicly announced competitions or on the basis of nominations from universities and other nonprofit institutions.
  • Grants focus on three fields: Asset Building & Community Development; Peace & Social Justice; and Knowledge, Creativity & Freedom.

  • Recognizes research in the field of credibility assessment, including the detection of deception.
