PhD Requirements

The following is taken from Northwestern's 2001/2003 Graduate School Bulletin
The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Current Students section of The Graduate School website.

Admission Qualifications

  • Supplementary Material: copies of published or submitted research reports
  • Undergraduate/Graduate Degree: no preference given to master's degree nor undergraduate psychology majors
  • Coursework Background: sufficient to demonstrate both interest in and ability to do research in chosen field of psychology
  • Relevant Research or Experience: none required, but preference given to applicants with demonstrated ability in conducting research
  • Other: official GRE scores; students must earn master's degree as a requirement of the PhD program

Courses

  • PSYCH 401-1 Psychology Proseminar: Biological and Cognitive Bases
    of Behavior: 1 unit
  • PSYCH 401-2 Psychology Proseminar: Social and Personality Bases
    of Behavior: 1 unit
  • Additional courses: 25 units

Total Required Units: 27 units
(Additional course requirements differ for the five Program Areas.)

Other PhD Requirements

  • Examinations: oral examination on master's thesis; for admission to candidacy, written examination, or paper, and oral examination
  • Research/Projects: in addition to master's project and PhD dissertation, students expected to engage in supervised research projects
  • PhD Dissertation: result of independent research in specialized field
  • Final Evaluations: oral examination on dissertation
  • Other: teaching assignment
