Applying for Outside Fellowships

Outside fellowships (e.g., NIMH NRSA, NSF, etc.) are good for both the individual students who receive them and for the program.  Students are encouraged to submit pre-proposals to the faculty – ideally in their third year of the program (though the faculty will accept pre-proposals from fourth year students).  Those designated as having a legitimate chance of being funded will be encouraged to proceed to submission.  If the student desires, such a submission will be counted as satisfying their prelim exam requirement.  (Note: the proposal does not have to be funded to satisfy the prelim exam requirement, it merely needs to be submitted to the funding agency.)
