Travel Opportunity Grants (TOG)

The Northwestern University psychology department’s Travel Opportunity Grants (TOG) program was designed to enhance the visibility of research conducted by NU undergraduates interested in graduate study in psychology.  The TOG program aims to increase the diversity among students who go on to graduate education in all areas of psychology.  Students who are from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in graduate psychology programs (e.g., certain racial and ethnic minorities, first-generation college students, etc.) are encouraged to apply for TOG awards.  Each student who applies for a TOG award must have a faculty sponsor in the psychology department.  Awards help students to offset the costs of traveling to conferences/meetings that their research mentors will be attending; mentors will be expected to help the student network.  We anticipate making three awards of up to $500 each, but requests up to $1500 will be considered as long as the student provides a detailed budget and budget justification.  At the conclusion of the project, students who receive a TOG award will be expected to turn in a copy of the poster they presented.

To apply:

  1. Complete a Travel Opportunity Grants application form
  2. Submit a draft of the abstract that you will submit to the conference/meeting (following the word limit required by the conference/meeting submission guidelines)
  3. Have the faculty member who will supervise your research write a confidential letter of support.
  4. Submit a copy of your transcript (an unofficial copy is fine).
  5. In the case of requests exceeding $500, complete a detailed budget and budget justification.

All application materials should be submitted to Professor Wendi Gardner (wgardner@northwestern.edu)

We will begin to review applications on 12/3/07 and we will continue to accept new applications and make awards on a rolling basis.
