Conference Overview
The Global Luther: Reconsidering the Contributions of Martin Luther
An International Conference
Northwestern University
Feb. 21-23, 2008
Martin Luther’s life and work has had an undeniable impact on world history. His name is synonymous worldwide with reformation; his work continues to enter discussions that extend beyond his own discipline of theology, and his authority continues to be invoked in many areas of theory and practice. Religion, spirituality, history, philosophy, politics, and theology are some of the fields that have been dramatically influenced by his person and work.
The conference The Global Luther: Reconsidering the Contributions of Martin Luther addresses the many aspects of Luther’s life and thought that are of global significance and continue to be of global relevance today. Each panel describes a key area of Luther’s life and work, showing how Luther understood this topic in his own historical context and analyzing the ways the area has functioned in the history of its reception. The panels also address topics in Luther’s thought that are of importance today. Luther is a key dialogue partner in contemporary concerns with the question of Christian life and experience, the problem of evil, and religious pluralism. Conference participants are scholars around the world who represent Luther as global theologian. Proceedings of the conference will be published as a volume entitled The Global Luther: Theologian for Modern Times by Fortress Press.
