Daniela
Petrovska, the WCAS Webmaster, presented a talk on
the new project to update Weinberg College’s
departmental websites. She is implementing the web
development process for nearly 50 sites in total.
The present goal of Northwestern is to produce a new
on-line face for the University- in this day and age
that is the face most people will see first. Therefore
the first priority is to update the image for the
outside world. As part of this movement there is a
newly developed set of standards, which includes an
identifying WCAS footer for all links, clear headings,
NU fonts and spacing requirements, and University
navigating requirements, i.e. “bread crumb”
navigation. These standards were developed in conjunction
with University Relations and even accommodate needs
for the visually impaired, using proper contrasts
and screen readers.
Department contacts responsible for website management
should work with Daniela and learn the standards.
The standards document can be requested. Training
for HTML and Java Script are also available through
Daniela, and these are the two mediums utilized in
the new design projects.
Eventually it is hoped that all College websites will
be located on the Dean’s office server for security,
but for right now more importantly the goal is to
change the look of websites and not to worry about
where the site is located.
You can see that the Weinberg website is newly designed—it
was just uploaded a couple of weeks ago. There is
a button at the site for user input and Daniela welcomes
feedback from us.
For all matters, Daniela prefers to be contacted via
email at

Ruth Reingold, Dir Computing Technology for WCAS,
can help work out logistical issues involving departments
and their websites. She can be reached at reingold@northwestern.edu.
