Why Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences?

4. Our advising system is second to none.

How far could you go if someone really got to know you, helped you over the rough spots, and made connections that opened wide your world of possibilities? Our advisers help students understand their strengths and find ways to advance their path.

The instructor of your fall freshman seminar is your adviser for the entire freshman year. In class, your adviser will learn your intellectual strengths. Then you’ll meet one-on-one to talk about your work, your interests and your life at Northwestern.

At the end of freshman year, you’ll meet your permanent Weinberg College Adviser, a faculty member well versed in what Northwestern offers. Your adviser can help you navigate through your second year and all the way to graduation. You’ll have an adviser in your major, too, but your Weinberg College Adviser will stick with you even if you change your major a dozen times.

Why Weinberg: Advising

“We try to create for each student the experience of being in a small liberal arts college within the context of a major research university. Someone is consistently here for the students, is familiar with them, and gives them the kind of personal attention they would get at a smaller school.” Mark Sheldon, Assistant Dean for Advising and Academic Integrity More about advising
5. We’re right next door to a world-class city.

Chicago offers extraordinary opportunities for internships, community service, and intellectual growth.

Oprah, Obama, and a patchwork of vital, culturally distinct neighborhoods; the cradle of modern architecture and improv comedy. Chicago is one of the great urban centers of the world, and it’s just a few miles and a short train ride away from Northwestern’s main campus. For our students, Chicago is a classroom, a playground and a proving ground.

Professors often use Chicago to enrich their courses, so that if you are studying King Lear, your class may see the play performed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on Navy Pier. Or your anthropology class might visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and its South African exhibit, dining afterwards at an Ethiopian restaurant. Learn about the city’s renowned architecture or check out traditional and experimental theatres or great places to hear blues, gospel, folk, jazz, pop and rock.

Weinberg also draws skilled professionals from Chicago to teach Professional Linkage Seminars that bridge the gap between academic training and real-world application.

6. Our thriving study abroad program will help you grow in unexpected ways.

There are many compelling reasons to study abroad--enough to inspire almost 250 Weinberg College students each year to leave for five continents. Some want to gain first-hand experience of another culture and learn how the world looks from another society’s point of view. Others are eager to become fluent in a foreign language.

You may want to complete a research project, live in a country struggling to find a democratic future, or walk ancient streets as you deepen your sense of history.

Many Weinberg College students see studying abroad as a key to understanding the world in which they will be living and working.

Why Weinberg: Study Abroad

"Study abroad was great in that it changed the way I view my home and my country. And in terms of my [Classics] major, it allowed me to see who the Greeks and Italians really were and how they are now." - Elizabeth Gabel, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Study Abroad in Greece More about studying abroad
