SFTP for Macintosh

Weinberg Web Communications recommends Dreamweaver 8 (or above) for editing and posting web pages. Dreamweaver users should consult Updating with Dreamweaver for more information.

SFTP for Macintosh should only be used when installing or upgrading Dreamweaver is not an option.

Installing Fetch

  1. Visit the Northwestern University Software Center (through E-Academy)
  2. Click Software (near top of window)
  3. Choose Fetch from the Search by product titles menu. Click Go
  4. Click Add to Cart (near bottom of window). You will not be charged for this software
  5. Follow the remaining instructions to download and install the software

Changing Your Password with Terminal

  1. Launch the Terminal application by browsing your hard drive to Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  2. In the Terminal window, type ssh USERNAME@www.wcas.northwestern.edu and hit enter (where USERNAME is the username assigned to you by Weinberg Web Communications)
    • If you receive a message saying "The authenticity of host... can't be established... Are you sure you want to continue connecting," type yes and hit enter
  3. Enter your password at the prompt
  4. Type passwd
  5. Create a new password by confirming your old password and entering a new password. You will be prompted to enter your new password twice
  6. Type exit
  7. Quit Terminal

Uploading and Downloading with Fetch

  1. Launch Fetch by browsing your hard drive to Applications > Fetch
  2. In the New Connection window enter the following information:

    Hostname: www.wcas.northwestern.edu
    Username: (your username)
    Connect using: SFTP
    Password: (your password)

    Click Connect
  3. Once you are logged in, under the Go menu, choose Go to folder...
  4. Type "/live/myfolder" (no quotes, note leading slash) where "myfolder" is the folder assigned to you by Weinberg Web Communications. Click OK
  5. Downloading:
    1. Highlight the file you want to download
    2. Click Get
    3. The file will be downloaded to your desktop
  6. Uploading:
    1. Click Put
    2. Browse to the file you want to upload and click Put
